This is the world you step into at Benham Estate on the River Kennet, one of the most storied and least spoken of fly fishing destinations in the south of England.
Benham Park carries you along the generous sweep of the main river and its carrier streams, water broad and forgiving enough to share a day with old friends or introduce someone entirely new to the sport. Wander further and you find the Lamb Stream, a smaller, more secretive water threading its way through the estate, intimate and exclusive. Together they offer a rare depth and variety of chalkstream fly fishing, from open water to hidden runs, all within the chocolate box setting of a quintessential old English estate.
Every season builds towards an explosive Mayfly hatch in late May and early June, when the river comes alive in a way that fly fishers wait all year to witness, the water erupting with rising trout as the hatch unfolds around you. It is one of the great spectacles of English fly fishing, and Benham is one of the finest places to see it.

Just five minutes west of Newbury, Benham Park needs little introduction among chalkstream fly fishers. Several miles of main river and carrier streams weave through parkland landscaped by the hand of Capability Brown, overlooked by a gorgeous stately home, with great oaks scattered across the water meadows and sheep grazing the grassland beyond. It is quintessential English countryside, and one of the finest fly fishing destinations on the River Kennet.
The main river is broad and generous, with long glides and deep pools that suit beginners and seasoned rods alike, the kind of water where a big Kennet brown will sit up out of the flow waiting for the right fly. The carrier streams, including the Duckwood stream, Pound stream and Parliament Draft, are the real heart of the fishery: narrow and intimate in places, calling for a careful bow and arrow cast on two knees, and in others shallower and quicker, gravel runs where trout hold tight to cover. Throughout the season, purple loosestrife colours the banks and the air carries the scent of watercress, meadowsweet and hemp agrimony, while ranunculus and ribbon weed riffle gently beneath the surface. Gary, river keeper of nearly 35 years, manages the margins so there is always cover for fish and room for a cast.
Day rod fishing at Benham Park is available for 1 to 4 rods on every day of the season, April through September, with Thursdays kept clear for maintenance and exclusive bookings. The Mayfly hatch, from mid May to mid June, brings the river to life and a minimum booking of 2 rods applies. A fully equipped fishing cabin sits close to the water for guests to break, brew a cup of tea, and share the stories of the day.
One of the best kept secrets on the estate, the Lamb stream is the stretch the guides and keepers call their own. Tucked away from the main river Kennet, the Lamb Stream is a full mile of straight, intimate carrier stream reserved exclusively for one or two rods a day. Roughly 15 to 20 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet deep, it runs quicker than you might expect compared to its Benham Park counterparts, the current pushing steadily over gravel and ribbon weed in a way that keeps the wild trout here alert, well conditioned and, on their day, remarkably large.
Fishing is single true left bank, with the water tracing a course through open water meadow before slipping beneath the cover of ancient woodland, so a day here moves between bright, breezy glides and shaded, secretive pools within the same short walk. Car parking sits just in the trees nearby, under a minute on foot from the water, and a fully equipped fishing cabin awaits with tea and coffee making facilities, a welcome pause between beats or a shelter from an English shower. A riverside picnic area makes it easy to break for lunch without ever straying far from the sound of the river.
The beat is only fished every other day to ensure it remains well-rested. With such tight control over rod numbers, the Lamb Stream fishes wonderfully quiet even in the height of summer, an entire mile of private water kept just for you and one companion, and the kind of place that rewards a careful cast with the chance of a very good fish indeed. We suggest bringing a picnic or if you prefer, we can take you to the local pub. For something special, our delightful range of riverside hampers are also available to preorder.
The million dollar question! Of course it depends on the season, but generally we suggest a good mix of dry flies and nymphs in the S14 – S16 range. Your fishing guide will come with all the flies required for your day, but if you would like to bring your own, our boxes will always feature a generous pinch of Blue Winged Olives, Parachute Adams’, Sawyers Pheasant Tail Nymphs, and Peeping Caddis.
Your fishing guide will come fully equipped with all the tackle and equipment required, but if you have your heart set on using your own, we suggest a rod in the 3 to 5 weight range, paired with an arbor reel, and a floating fly line. It is also wise to carry a pouch of tapered leaders in the 9ft to 12ft / 4x to 6x range to cover all basis.
Gratuity is not obligatory, but always very much appreciated. As a guideline, 10% to 15% of your guide fee is a good starting point.
Sadly, we cannot cancel or postpone your booking under any circumstances. However, if you are unable to attend your day, please let us know at your earliest convenience and we will endeavour to resell the booking for you. If we are successful, you will be eligible for a credit to the full value of your booking, valid for 24 months, or a refund minus a 25% admin fee.
