Blissfully secluded in the Test valley at the beating heart of rural Hampshire, lies the middle-earth village or Wherwell. Hidden away even further off the beaten track is the Wherwell Estate with access to many miles of the famous River Test and its carrier streams, and of course the trout lake!
There are many cosy country pubs in the area and Stockbridge, the fly fishing captial, is only a stone's throw downstream so if you are planning a weekend fishing trip this is the place to fish and stay.
Welcome to our fun and engaging introduction to fly fishing for trout, the perfect fly fishing experience for anyone who has never picked up a fly rod before.
This is a private 1 to 1 tuition for one person and small groups. You will spend the day in the company of a friendly, knowledgeable and fully qualified fishing instructor at Wherwell Lake, beautifully secluded in the Hampshire countryside. Throughout the day, we will cover everything you need to know so that when you leave, you are ready to get fishing under your own steam; including choosing the right equipment and tackling up, tying knots, kick sampling, the study of insects and fly selection, casting, and hooking and landing your first trout! There is even the option to take one home for supper if you wish.
We supply all the tackle, equipment and flies required, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. Also included are teas, coffees, and light refreshments, plus wellington boots in all adult sizes, and there's the option to add on a picnic hamper for lunch outdoors. We have fully equipped fishing lodges with all the facilities, so there will always be somewhere for spectating guests to sit and watch. If you are staying locally or travelling by train, we can pick you up and take you to the fishing at no extra cost. Under 18s are welcome, they always love it, and if you are tight for time, check out the half day option below.

Wherwell Lake is beautifully secluded in the Test valley, just 10 minutes from the fly fishing village of Stockbridge. There are good transport connections from London to Andover or Winchester.
If you are planning to eat and stay locally, there are many good pubs in the area. We recommend the Grosvenor, the Greyhound on the Test, or the Peat Spade.
We will send you a full booking confirmation by email, along with any maps, directions, travel arrangements, and arrival instructions required, plus the contact information for your Guide.
Our guides will come equipped with all the tackle, equipment and flies required at no extra cost.
We suggest bringing a picnic or if you prefer, we can take you to the local pub. For something special, our delightful range of riverside hampers are also available to preorder.
The million dollar question! Of course it depends on the season, but generally we suggest a good mix of dry flies and nymphs in the S14 – S16 range. Your fishing guide will come with all the flies required for your day, but if you would like to bring your own, our boxes will always feature a generous pinch of Blue Winged Olives, Parachute Adams’, Sawyers Pheasant Tail Nymphs, and Peeping Caddis.
Your fishing guide will come fully equipped with all the tackle and equipment required, but if you have your heart set on using your own, we suggest a rod in the 3 to 5 weight range, paired with an arbor reel, and a floating fly line. It is also wise to carry a pouch of tapered leaders in the 9ft to 12ft / 4x to 6x range to cover all basis.
Gratuity is not obligatory, but always very much appreciated. As a guideline, 10% to 15% of your guide fee is a good starting point.
Sadly, we cannot cancel or postpone your booking under any circumstances. However, if you are unable to attend your day, please let us know at your earliest convenience and we will endeavour to resell the booking for you. If we are successful, you will be eligible for a credit to the full value of your booking, valid for 24 months, or a refund minus a 25% admin fee.
